Dr. Das is widely known in the country for successfully setting up and leading the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) project as its Joint Principal Investigator. As a computer scientist, he has a unique blend of both academic and industry experience. After completing his Ph.D. in 1988 from IIT, Kharagpur, he served there as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering for a decade from 1988. Subsequently he shifted to industry, initially as the Director for Alumnus Software, and as the CEO, Quaint Technology, a start-up, before joining Interra Systems as a Senior Director and Centre Head, Kolkata in 2001. His areas of expertise include computer vision, digital learning, digital geometry, and image processing. Dr Das has been a Visiting Professor with the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, University of Calcutta (2003–12), Head of the Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship, IIT Kharagpur, (2013–20), Professor-in-Charge for the Research Park, IIT Kharagpur (2017–20), and the Visiting Professor at the Ashoka University. Recognition for Dr Das’s work includes the UGC Young Teachers’ Career Award (1993), Young Associateship of Indian Academy of Sciences (1992), INSA Young Scientist Award (1990), and UNESCO/ROSTSCA Young Scientist Award (1989).
